Daily Drop-in Program

Basic services available at Tukisigiarvik:

  • Clients can relax in the Centre’s comfortable and safe environment
  • Tea, coffee, bannock, cooked breakfast and lunch, and Inuit traditional foods
  • Counseling services: drop-in or by appointment
  • Access to Elder advisors for advice or support
  • Drop-in cultural skills activities
  • Access to bathing and laundry facilities for personal hygiene

Counselling & Wellness Programs

Counselling for:

  • Individuals
  • Families
  • Relationships
  • Grief and loss
  • Alcohol and drug users
  • Incarcerated individuals

Physical, mental health, and wellness programs for:

  • Suicide intervention
  • Anger management
  • Support for Former Residential and Federal Day School Students

Healing Retreats

During healing retreats, participants  find solutions to their problems,  develop greater self-esteem, resiliency, and enhanced pride in the Inuit language and culture.

  • Spring and summer land camps
  • Multi-day retreats for men and women
  • Led by Inuit counsellors and Elder-advisors
  • Based in Inuit societal values, beliefs and practices

Cultural Skills Development

Year-round program activities vary according to the season and include:

  • Making parkas and amoutiq
  • Skin preparation
  • Kamik making
  • Beading
  • Tent making
  • Qamutiik making
  • Small tool making: ulu, unark, niksiq, agvik, innirvik, net making
  • Small engine repair.

Land Skills Development

Year-round program activities vary according to the season and include:

  • Hunting, fishing, and gathering
  • Camping and living off the land
  • Wayfinding and GPS
  • Weather prediction
  • Navigation.

The Nunamiut Care Camp

Traditional camping, hunting, and gathering. 
6-7 day trips in July-August at Illuluajjuit, 12 KM from Iqaluit.

  • For families & individuals with no other access to camping and land activities
  • Led by Inuit Elders, counsellors and hunter-guides
  • Daily cultural activities
  • Daily wellness activities
  • Quality family time

Language Enhancement

Whether they are already Inuktitut speakers or are learning Inuktitut, participants develop and enhance their own Inuktitut skills.

Participants are taught:

  • Cultural skills using Inuktitut words
  • Traditional terminology and specialized Inuktitut language
  • Holistically, through a living model of Inuktitut
